Self Sacrifice

A Tribute to Those Who Lead…

Monday, July 8, 2013

One Eric Howard saw that a wildfire was spreading towards a farming neighbor’s property. In Weld County, Colorado that day, he didn’t wait for emergency crews to arrive. Without hesitation, he returned with haste to his own farm, fired up his tractor, and hurried back to help stop the advancing flames, to protect the surrounding farmland.

Using his tractor, the farmer raced across the field to create firebreak strips of exposed soil. These help to slow or stop the spread of fire, removing the vegetation and other combustible material in its path. (A technique is widely used in rural areas.)
